The PATHS2050 Coalition continues to grow. TotalEnergies is joining the initiative led by VITO, partner in EnergyVille, bringing additional expertise from Belgium's refining sector. The coalition now brings together ten leading industrial and energy players working towards a climate-neutral and economically strong Belgium by 2050.

As the coalition enters the next phase of its work, TotalEnergies will contribute to further refining the PATHS2050 model for the refinery sector. This includes exploring the sector's future role in both energy production and feedstock (raw materials for the chemical industry), as well as assessing how renewable hydrogen (often referred to as green hydrogen) can contribute to future fuel production and support the decarbonisation of the transport sector.

This focus is also driven by the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III), which requires Member States to ensure that by 2030 Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) account for at least 1% of the transport energy supplied.

Like the other coalition partners, TotalEnergies will actively exchange knowledge, challenge assumptions and test ideas against the perspectives of the other members. This cross-sector collaboration remains at the heart of the PATHS2050 Coalition, ensuring that the scenarios continue to reflect technological developments, industrial realities and evolving policy needs.

Exchanging perspectives with policymakers

Alongside further strengthening the roadmap, the PATHS2050 Coalition will also step up its dialogue with both federal and regional policymakers. By exchanging and challenging perspectives with governments, the coalition aims to further strengthen the relevance of its analyses and support evidence-based policymaking.

Drawing on the latest scientific insights and input from more than 200 EnergyVille researchers from KU Leuven, VITO, imec and UHasselt, PATHS2050 continues to provide an essential compass for industry and policymakers. Its data-driven scenarios lay the groundwork for evidence-based decisions that balance climate ambition with economic strength.

About the PATHS2050 Coalition

The PATHS2050 Coalition brings together VITO, partner in EnergyVille, and ten leading industrial and energy players to explore how Belgium can become climate-neutral by 2050 while maintaining economic resilience.

The coalition was established in early 2024 by VITO, partner in EnergyVille, together with ArcelorMittal, BASF, Elia, Fluxys and Luminus. In 2025, Engie, Holcim, Otary and SCK CEN joined the initiative. TotalEnergies followed in 2026. Together, the partners exchange and challenge insights on the future Belgian energy system and contribute complementary expertise to the continuous refinement of the PATHS2050 scenarios.

Backed by Belgium’s most detailed techno-economic energy system model and rigorous, data-driven analysis, the coalition develops and refines possible pathways towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. These insights help policymakers and industrial players assess which steps can already be taken today to achieve climate goals, and to ensure economic resilience in line with the European Clean Industrial Deal.
